Quatuor pour la fin du temps |
1941 |
In memory of all the victims of Nazism and the musicians of the premiere:
Olivier Messiaen
Henri Akoka
Jean Le Boulaire
Étienne Pasquier.
BFS deals with Olivier Messiaen's »Quatour pour la fin du temps« and its socio-political dimension. The focus is on the musical examination of the historical context of this work.
Composed in 1940/'41 while Messiaen was a prisoner of war in Stalag VIII in Görlitz, the almost 50-minute work is an urgent reminder not to forget the atrocities committed by the Nazis. Nevertheless, it ends with a glimmer of hope, which Messiaen found for himself through religion and his deep faith.
We would like to underline this historical context with Tristan Murail's »Stalag VIII A« (2018). In his work, written in 2018, Murail refers directly to the Quartet for the End of Time and recalls its history. He makes audible the trepidation we feel today when thinking about Nazi crimes and entering former concentration camps.
We crystallize our interpretation by adding these contemporary sounds as a prologue to the main work
As an ensemble based in Germany, we feel particularly committed to a culture of remembrance. At a time when right-wing structures and populism are currently on the rise again throughout Europe, we do not want to look away, but rather listen and take a stand.
Premiere: 17/11/2019 /// 23/11/2019
Lorch am Rhein /// Nogent-sur-Marne, Paris
BFS is invited to perform the Quatuor pour la fin du temps on the date and place of its premiere at the International Messiaen Days in Görlitz. (15/01/2023)
We do not forget.
We empathise.
